is it worth it to pay an extra $55 to get a DF Musha instead of a Ronin Dojo?
i mean i heard both were good, and by steel comparison it seems that the most obvious difference between the 2 is that the DF Musha is 1060 vs the Ronin is 1045 - but does that and w/e other differences make it worth spending the extra $?

My only run with 1045 steel is a Mushashi that I have. Differences in heat treatment aside, I believe that 1045 is the base lowest acceptable steel for swords. Mine is soft and the edge will roll but it was a cheap (inexpensive) sword.
Unless Ronin is doing something fantastic with that steel, I find it hard to believe that the quality of blade would exceed that of the Dynasty Forge I have seen. Realize I have never seen a Ronin.
The shobu mentioned above is a killer work horse heavy cutter. It's a shobu, that what they are. Still, the balance beats the hell out of my CS dragonfly.
All else aside, my logic is to buy from a forge with a good reputation. Both Ronin and Dynasty Forge seem to pass muster. Assuming that they both do an acceptable heat treatment, I would easily spend the the extra money on a blade made of a steel with a better potential than 1045 can provide.

^What he said! (and very well,I might add). I think you will hear exactly this opinion, though phrased many different ways. For me, personally (JUST MY OPINION), a 1045 steel katana would only be used for the VERY lightest cutting (pool noodles, ...?). So, yes, if it were my wallet, I would definitely hand over another $55.00 for a 1060 blade. Consider this, too: even Musashi Bamboo katana switched to 1060 after a "first generation" of 1045 blades, and you can get one of those to your front door for under a hundred bucks! I'm not advocating that sword as being anywhere near the quality of Ronin Dojo or DF, just making a point. Good luck and let us know which one you go with, eh?

The Ronin katana are made in the dotanuki style, i.e. thicker. Dotanuki means 'torso-cutter', I believe. There's more info on the Ronin katana here: http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/Ronin-Katana.html

Here's a thread with my [not-so-good] drawings: http://sbgswordforum.proboards.com/index....ad=15860&page=1Feel free to comment and whatnot. Also, tips and suggestions to improve said drawings would be greatly appreciated. "Do you know how to use that thing?" "Yes. The pointy end goes into the other man." |

yea i did some research on both (more on Ronin then DF but i know both have a good reputation) and im thinking of going for a DF Musha (that being if there are any left w/ a theme besides Musashi at the time i have the extra money cuz i dont care for the generic Musashi ring theme and i wouldnt have the money to change the Tsuba)
i also know that Ronin has Silk Ito whereas DF has Cotton Ito (but i heard good quality so that wouldnt matter to me)
just wanted to know the community's thoughts.

I have a couple of the Ronin 1045, one Ronin 1060 Pro and one Ronin Elite. My only DF are the 1095 Bushi. The Ronin 1045 are some tough little bastards. As Dom said, they are thick.
You cannot go wrong no matter which one you buy.
